How to play Reversi

Open Reversi, check the instructions and begin a round. When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Look at what changes after your first action.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Black moves first. Highlighted cells show legal placements.
  2. Place a disc to trap one or more opponent discs in a straight line.
  3. Every trapped line from that placement is flipped.
  4. If a player has no legal move, the turn automatically passes.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

Black–white–empty can become black–black–black when Black plays in the empty square. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

A placement must flip at least one opposing disc; simply placing beside your own discs is not enough. A different version of the game may use a different rule. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
